Is it solid intel or just another lame grasp at scooping everyone on Apple's biggest news since, well, the last iPhone announcement?
A new report says an announcement from Apple about its next-generation iPhone is just around the corner. This piece of news emanates from tech site Know Your Mobile, which cites a "reliable industry source who wishes to remain anonymous" ? don't they all? ? who says Aug. 7 is the day Apple fans and the service providers who offer the phones should mark on their calendars. It'll happen during a keynote speech that day, the site says.
But before you dismiss this as just another rumor, chatter about a release-date announcement has been slowly moving up over the past couple of weeks. For quite a while, consensus was an October release to line up with last year's launch of the iPhone 4S. But a couple of weeks ago, September became a popular prediction for some industry watchers, and just a few days ago we first got wind of a possible August debut.
There's been all kinds of talk about what to expect in terms of specs on an iPhone 5 (or whatever it will be called). LTE-compatibility is virtually a lock since the third-generation iPad came with it. Odds are pretty good that it will feature a bigger screen, perhaps as large as 4.08 inches, many media outlets have reported. Beyond that, it's anybody's guess, with talk of a thinner device, NFC technology and more being tossed around.
Whatever we get, there's little doubt that the new iPhone will help Apple maintain its status as the world's best selling smartphone.
